Timur's unfinished mausoleum on the steppe
Kazakhstan's spiritual centre, built around the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi — commissioned by Timur in 1389, never finished, and still carrying the wooden scaffolding pegs where work stopped when he died.

Signature local dishes worth seeking out.
Train or flight from Almaty; the old town is compact.
The mausoleum is a working pilgrimage site — dress modestly and expect crowds on Fridays.
Safe; visa-free for many nationalities.
