Pine forest, white sand and wooden villas
A 25km strip of white-sand Baltic beach backed by pine forest, half an hour from Riga, lined with wooden art nouveau villas built when this was the Russian empire's seaside resort. Still a spa town, now a quieter one.

Signature local dishes worth seeking out.
Train from Riga takes 30 minutes and runs constantly.
The Baltic is cold — locals go for the pine air and the spas as much as for swimming.
Very safe.
