A church on a ridge under a 5,000m peak
Stepantsminda, still called Kazbegi by everyone, sits at the end of the Georgian Military Highway under Mount Kazbek. Gergeti Trinity Church stands alone on a ridge above the town — one of the most photographed views in the Caucasus, and it earns it.

Signature local dishes worth seeking out.
Marshrutka minibus from Tbilisi (3h); 4x4 hire for the valleys.
Walk up to the church rather than taking a 4x4 — it is 1.5 hours through meadows and the view builds the whole way.
Very safe for travellers; low crime. Avoid the South Ossetia and Abkhazia administrative boundaries.
