Gothic cathedral town in the east
Slovakia's second city, built around the largest Gothic cathedral in the country and a long pedestrian main square lined with pastel townhouses. It was European Capital of Culture in 2013 and is noticeably cheaper and less visited than Bratislava.

Košice is the gateway to the Slovak Karst caves and Spiš Castle — both easy day trips.
